Ministerial Event, Open to the Public, Following Official Launch by Heads of State

Over 50 Countries Worldwide to Announce Bold Commitment to Protect at least 30% of the World’s Land and Ocean by 2030

Co-Chaired by Costa Rica, France and the United Kingdom, the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People Will Be Launched on January 11

WHAT: The High Ambition Coalition (HAC) for Nature and People is an interregional group of more than 50 countries co-chaired by Costa Rica, France and the United Kingdom, championing a global deal for nature and people that can halt the accelerating loss of species, and protect vital ecosystems that are the source of our survival and economic security. The HAC’s key goal is to get a global agreement to protect at least 30% of the planet’s land and ocean by 2030 at the Convention on Biodiversity’s COP15 in 2021. The HAC for Nature and People will officially launch at the One Planet Summit, hosted by President Macron of France in cooperation with the World Bank and the United Nations. The HAC for Nature and People will be launched by the Heads of State of Costa Rica and France, who co-chair the coalition with the United Kingdom, and will be followed by a Ministerial Event with Ministers from across the global inter-regional group.

Reporters are invited to attend the two events: the official launch at 2:00 p.m. CET//8 a.m. EST and the ministerial event at 6:30 p.m. CET//12:30 p.m. CET.  More information.

WHO: The meeting will be moderated by Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the HAC co-chairs H. E. Andrea Meza, Minister of Environment and Energy of Costa Rica; Berangere Abba, Secretary of State for Biodiversity of France; and the Rt Hon Lord Zac Goldsmith, Minister of State and Minister for Pacific and the Environment of the United Kingdom—and will include live and prerecorded interventions from ministers from Canada, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Ethiopia, the European Commission, Gabon, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Pakistan, Peru, Portugal, Romania, Rwanda, Spain, Switzerland and United Arab Emirates. Representatives from Indigenous Peoples, UN high level representatives and a scientist will also participate.
